Step 2 – Conducting the Inspection
Comprehensive Workplace Inspections must be carried out quarterly. A Health and Safety Representative, or other delegated employee(s), will carry out the inspection using using the Workplace Inspection Checklist.
Note: It is important that during the inspection there is constructive engagement with the workers in the work areas under inspection, to provide a real opportunity for their comment and feedback.
As part of the inspection:
- The “Comments” section of the report form must be completed in respect of each category recorded on the form.
- Any sub-standard conditions must be noted (and work stopped immediately if there is an imminent serious risk to health and safety).
- Any sub-standard practices must be noted (and work stopped immediately if there is an imminent serious risk to health and safety).
- Inadequate hazard controls must be noted (and addressed immediately).
- A key part of the process is keeping an open mind for new hazards not previously identified; and closely examining the impact of any changes introduced since the last inspection.
Refer to the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control Procedures as necessary.
Note:
- A Health and Safety Representative may issue a provisional improvement notice, requiring a matter to be remedied. However, such notice must not be issued until the person concerned has been consulted. A copy of the notice must be given to the local Manager and the PCBU.
- A Health and Safety Representative may direct a worker to cease work if he/she reasonably believes that carrying out the work would expose the worker, or any other person, to a serious risk arising from an immediate or imminent exposure to a hazard.
- A worker may refuse to carry out work if they believe there is an imminent serious risk to health and safety. Efforts must first be made to attempt to resolve the matter with the Site Manager.
