Management Responsibility

To compete successfully our people need to be better than those of our competitors – better trained, better skilled, better motivated, or in summary, better managed. Therefore you have the responsibility to demonstrate competence in the management of your people.

We cannot afford under-performing people in our teams. You are expected to manage the performance of your people and coach or discipline as circumstances demand.

Note: In terms of responsibility/accountability for such matters we apply the “one-over-one” principle whereby all issues that would impact on employee earnings or job security must be referred to the next level manager. Where appropriate and necessary, additional specialist information, assistance and advice should be obtained.

Principles of Excellence

The following principles are viewed as essential actions for excellence in managing our people:

ACT We achieve our results through the skill and motivation of our people.
Identify problems early and resolve quickly.
APPRECIATE Observe people in action: ask, listen, encourage and advise.
COACH Increase the skill and intellect of the business and enhance its ability to grow and prosper by developing your people to the extent of their potential.
COMMUNICATE Let people know what is happening in the business and in their work place. Seek their ideas and listen to their issues – converse.
EMPOWER Delegate responsibility based on strengths and capabilities. Provide clear expectations and goals as well as support, guidance and feedback. Develop self-managing teams.
GOAL Be clear about the business and local objectives and our performance expectations.
Do not accept poor performance. Explain the improvements required and ensure response.
BE ACCOUNTABLE, BE FAIR, BE CONSISTENT, BE SUPPORTIVE AND LEAD BY EXAMPLE
